Blights are a dangerous force of nature tainted by evil magics. When they are found it means only awful things for the surrounding land, and as such need to be dealt with handily.
From the journal of Scorros Illitor:
Twig blights are easily destroyed and thus easily underestimated. Their exceptional camouflage makes them perfect ambush predators and greatly impedes efforts to exterminate them. Unchecked, they will overwhelm the natural growth of the forest and, in time, the people of Longreach.
Also of note: Twig blights are terrified of fire and will avoid creatures armed with lit torches. Fire should only be used to this end in survival situations, as exterminating the blights in close combat is infinitely preferable to allowing them to scatter and breed.
-Excursion of 5/18/874
From an excerpt by Breknar Swampshield in an excursion one week later:
"The blight still fled in sight of fire, [but] It should be noted that simply carrying fire alone was not always enough to scare off an undiscovered blight. When torches are waved in a general area blight will leap from cover and flee"
